A Bit About Me
Flight Sergeant Simon Walford joined 298 Hornsea squadron back in 1994 before later
transferring to 399. During his time as a cadet he achieved the rank of Cadet Flight
Sergeant and represented the squadron at drill, aircraft recognition and modelling at both
Wing and Region levels.
He attended four cadet camps during his career and did work experience on these camps in
the armoury and the engineering sections. He gained his silver glider wings at RAF
Linton-on-Ouse in 1999. He left 399 to concentrate on his college work in November
1999.
However, the squadron did not leave his heart or his mind and after an absence of ten years
he returned to 399 as a CI. From there he worked his way back into uniform gaining his
Sergeant rank in 2011 and becoming a Flight Sergeant in 2015. During his time he has
both acted as both the Second in command and now as its Commanding Officer.
He also is a member of the Air Operations Acquaintance Centre which teaches cadets
about both air to air and air to ground operations using simulators. He also helps out at 298
Squadron with drumming and learning various subjects. He is well known through many
generations of cadets for his “character building” comments.
Outside of cadets, Flight Sergeant Walford works at Costa Flemingate where cadets often
go for a social brew with each other. In his spare time, Flight Sergeant Walford enjoys
painting and drawing, making models and writing.
